Learn the routes through the mansion you use most, and clear out those areas with fire. You'll be passing through the same corridors many times in the course of the game on a quest for new items or to unlock previously closed rooms. One of the reasons Crimson Heads are such a pain is that Resident Evil requires a lot of backtracking. If you can ever possibly complete an area without killing a zombie, by all means do so. For example, there's no reason for you to finish off Yawn, the giant snake, during your first boss encounter as Jill. Bullets are scarce, healing items scattered and well-guarded. Resident Evil enforces a harsh rule of conservation.
